What you see and what you can search for with our web search engine is only a very small part of the information in our CD-ROM and directory. They have much more information, let you construct as complex a search as you want, and sort the results of the search. You can search by any part of a name alone; any part of the type; any part of the telephone number; any combination of sexual orientation; any part of whatever field or fields you want; any way you want! Unlike the web search engine, with the CD-ROM you are not forced to put in a type and country for every search (try this demo to find out how easy the CD-ROM is). Found listings can be sorted by name; by city; by province / state; by postal code; by country; by type; or by sexual orientation. You can print the information on the CD-ROM and you can also add your own notes to any listing. Try doing that with a web search engine!

Hint 1: For Internet and Web resources, please choose "Internet resources types, only" as the country, since they're worldwide, without a country to call their own. (The database is unlikely, however, to have more than the name of the Internet Newsgroups, their e-mail address, the primary orientation of their users, and the type of resource).

Hint 2: If you're looking for all the resources in a particular category, use "Any and All Orientations" in the Orientation field. If you're looking for the resources that specifically cater to "All Sexes & Orientations," then choose "Specifically All Orientations." The difference is subtle, but it will make a big difference to your searches.

Hint 3: Please do not put your own name in the Name field. It's for the name of an organization or company you seek. If you put your own name in this field, the search engine will try to find you. With a few exceptions, you're not likely to be in the database.... We do not collect names using this field.

We update the database approximately every month. Please try to narrow your search as much as possible, so as to give the server time to service everyone else visiting our site. (If your searches are too broad, for example "find all Organizatons, BDSM in the U.S.A.," it slows down the search considerably). Your fellow visitors will appreciate the increase in speed. If, however, your search finds no resources, please feel free to broaden your search. There is a listing for each category in the list, although not in every country....

You can get far more detail for each listing from the CD-ROM and paperback editions of Alternate Sources, where you can look up any number of references, any way you want.
